What is scaling in PLC?

In the context of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), scaling refers to the process of converting raw input values from field devices (sensors, transmitters, etc.) into engineering units that are meaningful and useful for the control system. The raw input values are typically in the form of voltage, current, resistance, or other electrical signals.

Scaling is necessary because the raw input values may not be in a format that is directly usable by the control system. For example, a temperature sensor may output a voltage signal that corresponds to a certain temperature range. Scaling allows you to convert this voltage signal into actual temperature units, such as degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.

The scaling process involves two main parameters:

Scaling Factor: This is a constant multiplier that converts the raw input value into engineering units. It is often determined by the specifications of the sensor or device.

Scaling Offset: This is an additive constant that is used to shift the scaled value, accounting for any offset in the raw input signal. Some sensors may have a non-zero output even when the measured quantity is zero, and the scaling offset helps correct for this.

The general formula for scaling is:

Engineering Units = ( Raw Input Value × Scaling Factor ) + Scaling Offset

For example, if you have a temperature sensor that outputs a voltage signal in the range of 0 to 10 volts, and you know that the temperature range corresponds to 0 to 100 degrees Celsius, you can use a scaling factor of 10 (since the voltage range is 0-10 volts) and a scaling offset of 0. The formula would then be:

Temperature (Celsius)=(Raw Voltage×10)+0

This scaled temperature value can then be used in the PLC's logic for control purposes. Scaling ensures that the PLC processes and uses meaningful engineering units, making it easier to understand and work with the data in the context of the control system.
