What is the difference between HMI and SCADA?

What is the difference between HMI and SCADA?

HMI vs scada
HMI and SCADA two terms for distinct industrial automation interfaces. HMIs are subsets or components of a SCADA system. Additionally, a DCS or Distributed Control System is very similar to a SCADA system, and may also use one or more HMIs as well. All these components are classes of, or describe parts of, an ICS or Industrial Control System, which is the general description of Automation. In modern control systems, there is a great deal of overlapping technology and functionality between these two classes of ICSs.

Additionally, HMI focuses on the graphical interface that allows humans to interact with machines and systems directly, while SCADA is a broader system that encompasses the collection, monitoring, and control of data from various industrial processes. HMIs are often a component of SCADA systems, providing a user-friendly interface for operators to access and control the data collected by SCADA.

What is HMI?

Human-machine interaction, or HMI. An HMI is a piece of hardware that houses software that enables human-machine interaction. HMIs are now essential components for equipment maintenance and operation because to this functionality.

Evolution of HMI:
HMI products were originally designed to meet the need for easily operational machinery, while producing optimal outputs. Predecessors of the HMI include the Batch Interface (1945-1968), Command-Line User Interface (1969-Present), and the Graphical User Interface (1981-Present).

How do HMI Work?
HMIs substitute graphical representations of the control process and digital controls to affect that process for manually operated switches, dials, and other controls. Operators can start and stop cycles, change set points, and carry out other tasks necessary to interface with and adapt a control process using HMIs.

HMI Applications:
HMIs are used throughout various industries including manufacturing plants, vending machines, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and utilities, among many other applications. HMIs, along with PLCs, are typically the backbone of the production line in these industries.

Supervisory control and data acquisition – SCADA:

Supervisory control and data acquisition is referred to as SCADA. A SCADA system consists of many hardware and software components. A SCADA system uses hardware and software to jointly control and monitor the equipment used in industrial processes. By recording process data in real-time and enabling adjustments to the control and setpoints from a distance, SCADAs improve workflow efficiency.

SCADA systems are used to manage production, detect faults, and enhance business procedures. SCADA systems enable several users to interact with the same system at once and store a lot of data.

These are some of the functions of a SCADA system:
System control using HMI software.
Real-time monitoring and management of all plant operations and manufacturing processes.
Gather any type of useful data.
Produce useful operating reports in real time.
Automate procedures, including those that regulate the energy consumption of machines, peak output, maintenance, etc.

Are SCADA and HMI complementary concepts?

The fact is that SCADA and HMI technologies are distinct and work well together. In reality, they are frequently combined to provide a valuable and effective industrial tool.
When it comes to massive industrial production infrastructures, SCADA systems are crucial. On the other hand, a SCADA system's monitoring will be carried out with the assistance of an HMI system.

This means that a SCADA system requires an HMI technology in order to be able to view all of the production chain information. The SCADA system has a separate HMI. Because of this, a lot of individuals are perplexed and believe SCADA and HMI to be interchangeable.

The SCADA's HMI, or "Human Machine Interface" unit, has the ability to monitor and manage anything linked to it. In conclusion, the SCADA can be a component of the HMI but not the other way around.
